Fasting is one of the curious Christian disciplines that has been practiced through the centuries. It is one that is often misunderstood or rather misrepresented as a means of getting God’s attention or impressing Him. As we have seen through the series on the Fourfold Grace of Prayer, prayer begins with God and flows through our humble submission to Him as we present our weakness and helplessness to Him, resulting in God accomplishing His purposes through our prayers to His glory. Fasting then, is a means prescribed by God to come humbly before Him, letting go of the very necessities of life for a period to focus on Him. Fasting has been described as an outward act of an inward need. |

Do you pray? How is your prayer life? Most Christians today must admit that they do not pray or at most admit that their prayer life is not what it could or should be. Why is this? God has commanded us to pray in His Word, He helps us to pray by the work of the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ, He hears us when we pray as a perfect father is attentive to his children, and He answers our prayers, but even greater – He changes us as we pray. |

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV) 7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit." There is much talk about the drought in the area and all the implications such as lush lawns turning brown, water restrictions, greater costs for water, and the general inconvenience that the lack of fresh water brings. As everyone agrees there is a lack of water, there are few who agree on what we should do and the reason is because there is a refusal to admit the root of the problem – us. Drought in the Bible was used by God for purposes of judgment or in moving people, but behind it all was something we might call, “uncomfortable grace,” which is God’s gift of being uncomfortable so we might turn to Him. |

That’s a misnomer, self control is not an art, it’s a dependency upon God. Left to ourselves, we do not have the ability to control anything, let alone ourselves. I believe we all get extremely frustrated as we try to control ourselves. Although if asked, we all think we do a good job at it, which is really self deception rather than self control. Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? |

If you have been to our house recently, you may have seen Jan’s artwork in which she brought out her favorite portion of scripture, Psalm 18, particularly the words of verse 19 which cannot help but bring good thoughts to mind as you contemplate God’s motivation to reach out to any one of us. Psalm 18:19 (English Standard Version) He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. |
