The word discipline does not stir up the greatest feelings in most people. Although the word has more to do with “training” rather than “punishment” we usually associate the word with the latter rather than the former. If we are not careful when we read passages as those in Hebrews 12, we will begin to think God is waiting for us to crack a smile so He can let us have it. Not so!

I receive an article this past week that asked the question: “Is your music still in you?” I thought it was a little peculiar so I read the article which began with a quote from Oliver Wendall Holmes who said, “Many people die with their music still within them.” The article continued with a challenge to discover your music which would be your gifts, talents, passion, etc. and don’t let another day pass without playing your music.

2 Corinthians 4:17 (KJV) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a
far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

2 Corinthians 4:17 (ESV) For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal
weight of glory beyond all comparison, 

We never think of affliction as being light. Today we have everything from light (lite) soft
drinks, meals, and even vacations. Light affliction sounds like just a little. It’s interesting in
the context of Paul writing about his light or slight afflictions it’s far from what we consider
to be light.

As we covered in Sunday’s message, God takes us through periods of delay to grow our faith. If we get impatient and complain or even if we get weary and take off when God is working, we will miss the opportunity to mature and for our faith to grow and He will just have to take us through a similar lesson down the road. God cares about us too much to let us go through life without faith growing experiences. Therefore, it is important to make the most of every delay in God’s maturing process.

Remember the commercials for Wendy’s Hamburgers where the lady looked at a hamburger
of a competitor and cried, “Where’s the Beef?” I was talking to a pastor friend who was
accused of not preaching grace because he was preaching the whole counsel of God and
not just the accomplishments of salvation by God’s grace. It was as if some in the
congregation were saying, “Where’s the grace?”
